The Heart has been at the center of human expression for centuries. Much has been said of the heart in music, poetry and art. The heart is where love, devotion, surrender, lust, longing, and passion reside. We are asked to “follow our heart” to be our authentic selves and live our Truth; our hearts “break” when we experience betrayal; it “aches” when we experience loss; and it overflows when we are full with gratitude.
In the February season of Primaverna, we are clearing what no longer serves us to eventually emerge anew in March during the Vernal Equinox period. Letting go can be a tricky biz, especially because with letting go comes a mixed bag of emotions–everything from excitement and joy to grief and sadness. It's easy to get stuck in emotional rabbit holes during this time. Aromatherapy can greatly aid your heart in surfing all your feels as they come up.

Why Being Heart Centered is So Important
Being heart centered refers to being emotionally balanced while being in tune with your intuition and authenticity. It means being able to make choices that reflect your inner Truths while still feeling all your feels. This doesn’t mean you don’t experience the rollercoaster of emotions that are part of human existence; it means you don’t get derailed by them. In short, you might freak out, but by following your heart, your truths, your intuition, you’ll figure it out.
You are inspired by the vision you have for your year. In order to actualize or manifest it, you have to let go of thoughts and feelings that no longer serve you. To do that, you have to be open to letting your heart feel your feels without judgemental thoughts that may get you lost down rabbit holes of shame, guilt or blame. For that is where the fear vibes live.
While surfing the emotions of letting go, witness the feelings as they arise, thank them for what they have taught you and then let them go. If you find yourself crying, let those tears roll. Research has found that in addition to being self-soothing, crying releases oxytocin and endorphins in our bodies, which help us feel good and may also ease both physical and emotional pain.
Aromatherapy can also be a really effective, powerful tool for harmonizing mind, body and spirit through this process. By inhaling its aromatic botanicals or applying them topically in diluted form, you can experience a profound sense of calm and harmony, while navigating Life’s challenges as you create the new for yourself.
Understanding how essential oils work their magic on your Heart Chakra
Essential oils work with your limbic system to carry chemicals from the plants through your body, activating your Chakras. According to Indian metaphysical tradition, chakras are centers within the body that maintain the flow of our prana, chi or life-force energy in correct balance—not too much or too little. Balanced life force energy brings greater calm and tranquility to life. When this energy is imbalanced, it can disrupt mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. FYI, that’s Ayurveda and Aromatherapy in a nutshell.
We all have different physiological, psychological and energetic states and frequencies. So how can the same plant oil help us all do the same thing? While an Essential oil may have a set of properties to help with particular concerns, the way it works specifically for you will depend on your individual state and frequency.
Heart balancing Essential oils have properties that will help calm and open the heart Chakra. When you inhale a heart harmonizing essential oil, look for sensations in the middle of your chest area. When your heart chakra opens, it basically feels like your heart is expanding, the way it does when you are moved by a particularly beautiful passage of music, or someone’s smile melts your heart.
If that is not happening right away, breathe into your Heart Chakra. Focus on your Heart Chakra area. Breathe in slowly through your nose, filling your lungs and expanding your chest in the heart area out. Exhale through your nose, contracting the same heart area. The movement in the chest feels like your heart is breathing along with your lungs. Visualized this as well. Keep doing this until you feel heart-expansive. Your heart chakra is now officially open. Now try inhaling those essential oils for the Heart again.
Pay attention to any tingling, tickling or achy sensations. Every essential oil is able to help with more than one issue. Stay with your body sensation and follow it to see where it might go next. This is your body speaking to you. Sometimes it's just telling you where the effects of the oil are landing; other times it may be guiding you to something more serious that requires your attention.
Geranium Oil for Harmony
Geranium essential oil boasts a rich history of use dating back centuries. Ancient Egyptians revered it for its therapeutic properties, incorporating it into skincare routines and aromatic rituals. In Ayurveda, geranium oil is valued for its ability to balance the doshas, and for its calming effect on the mind and emotions. Its pleasant aroma calms the nervous system and uplifts the mood, In the 17th century, European botanists began exploring its medicinal qualities, leading to its integration into traditional herbal medicine.
In Aromatherapy, geranium’s floral aroma resonates with the heart chakra. It supports feelings of harmony and connection while taking the edge off stress and anxiety. Spiritually, geranium oil fosters a sense of inner peace and self-acceptance, fostering harmonious relationships with ourselves and others. Compassion and empathy flow naturally, leading to a deep sense of interconnectedness with all beings.
Physically, geranium oil is valued In skincare for its ability to cleanse, rejuvenate and get your glow going. In massage therapies, it promotes relaxation, alleviates muscle tension, and enhances overall well-being.
I love Geranium essential oil for the way it likes to get right into your heart and expand it while taking all the pointy edges off your thought processes. It brings a relaxing calm that helps you confidently trust in yourself. That’s one of the reasons I like formulating with it.

Lavender essential oil, derived from the Lavandula angustifolia plant, has been used since Ancient times for its aromatic and therapeutic properties. It was commonly used in bathing rituals, perfumes, and medicinal preparations.
In Aromatherapy, lavender oil’s gentle floral aroma resonates with the heart chakra, increasing feelings of harmony, peace, relaxation and self-love while easing emotional tension. Inhaling Lavender can help soothe the mind and uplift the spirit; and calm nervous restlessness while fostering a sense of peace. Lavender oil is also used for spiritual purification, cleansing and clarity, helping you connect with your inner wisdom and intuition.
Physically, lavender oil’s anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic properties make it valuable for skincare, aiding in the treatment of minor burns, wounds, and insect bites. Eucalyptus for Opening, Release and Protection
Eucalyptus essential oil, extracted from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree, has a long history of use. Indigenous Australian Aboriginal peoples use eucalyptus leaves in their medicine for treating various ailments such as respiratory infections, muscle pain, and wounds. In Ayurveda, eucalyptus is regarded as a source of heating energy, helping to dispel internal chill and strengthen metabolism and circulation.
In Aromatherapy, Eucalyptus oil helps relieve stress with its powerful aroma. Its invigorating scent is a great mood booster that refreshes and raises your energy levels. It opens up your airways, promoting deeper breathing and life force flow. It can also help release emotional blocks so that you can have that good cry and re-center your heart.
Physically, eucalyptus oil is beloved for its ability to ease respiratory issues such as coughs, colds, and sinus congestion. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it effective in soothing sore muscles and wound healing. When used in skincare, eucalyptus oil can help cleanse and clarify the skin.
Spiritually, eucalyptus oil is used to purify and cleanse the energy field, creating a sense of fresh renewal. Its stimulating scent can uplift the spirit and promote feelings of optimism and resilience.
I love eucalyptus oil for the way it opens your heart up while grounding you at the same time. And if that wasn’t enough, it brings your head into the picture, revving up your whole being to take on whatever is in front of you. At the same time, it knows just what to do when you are feeling achy, painy or under the weather–it creates a calming space for you to heal.
Eucalyptus oil is also a smell from my childhood. IT came out whenever we were sick or achy. I use it to this day–a couple of drops in hot water or tea will help decongest my lungs when i have a cold. Or I use Ma’s Massage oil when my muscles ache and knot.
